"I love being a part of the breaking of barriers and re-defining what leadership and resilience looked like in a traditionally male-dominated field."

the inside scoop…

What does a Design Engineer actually do?
A design engineer assists in the development and statusing of the Design programme, while coordinating all design process to ensure it is delivered in line with the programme, procurement dates and construction dates. I also assist with managing Design Consultants and D&C Subcontractors to ensure that they provide the design development or shop drawings within the required time, cost and quality.

What does a day in your life at work look like?
My day will always start with a coffee! But other than that everyday is so different! It ranges from reviewing on-site items to presenting and hosting workshops with the client and other stakeholders.

What's the best part of your job?
The best part of my job is that I am able to assisting in transforming abstract ideas into tangible solutions. I am able to see actual designs come to life, from sketch, to samples, to prototype and then to a final product is very satisfying. I am not just theorizing; you’re creating real-world impact. I love that my role is so dynamic with the different people I am able to work with, from D&C Subcontractors to the Client, other engineers etc. It is therefore never stagnant and constantly evolving.

What made you realise construction could be for you?
Honestly, I hadn’t really thought about it until I was finishing school and still had no idea what to do with my life. My dad thought it would be something I should try, and so I did it and I have never looked back!

What's the best thing about working in construction?
Changing the stereo-type that construction is just for men. I love being a part of the breaking of barriers and re-defining what leadership and resilience looked like in a traditionally male-dominated field. I love that construction offers women the chance to physically shape the world in a literally form, from design to execution. It is a career where passion and dedication can not only influence just projects but also the entire culture of the industry.

What do your friends and family think about working in construction?
My friends and family think that it is awesome to see women paving the way in a male dominated industry. They admire me being party of breaking the stereotype and paving the way for future generations.
