the inside scoop…

What was your journey into your current role?
It was quiet a linear process for me. During my masters was the time when I actively looked for jobs in architecture. I was able to do two internships and then got a job as a student in architecture. Naturally when I graduated from my masters I became a graduate of architecture and continued working from there.

What surprised you about working in construction?
I quickly learned that being on-site, problem-solving with engineers and contractors, is just as important as what happens in the office. No matter how much you plan before hand there is always something that can take you by surprise. A myth I heard before going to site as a woman was that I wouldn’t be respected on job sites. While there have been challenges, I’ve found that everyone has been very respectful and I have been able to build a strong working relationship with those on site.

What’s been your career highlight to date?
Becoming a registered architect.

What made you realise construction could be for you?
Seeing my first completed project made me realise i wanted to keep working in the construction industry. It was a primary school and seeing all the kids enjoying the space was really rewarding.

What would you say to a 15 year old you thinking about a job in construction?
I would say that I wish I knew there were other career pathways besides being an architect after studying architecture. I now know there are many different carrer options and opportunities with a degree in architecture and it does not limit you architecture when you graduate from university.
